Duka made it possible

It is never too late to learn how to use a computer. Lars Peter’s grandmother had given up on computer technology until her grandchild developed a computer specifically for seniors.

It started with a birthday greeting

On the 13th of October, 2009, Ellen Martens called her grandchild, Lars Peter Larsen, to congratulate him on his birthday. After talking for some time, Ellen Martens told him that there was something that she wished that she had learned. “I told him that I sometimes regret never having learned how to use a computer. There’s a whole other world that has never really been accessible to me,” Ellen Martens says.

An easy computer

That’s when the idea behind duka occurred. Lars Peter Larsen has worked full time with IT since he was a teenager and is somewhat of an inventor so it came naturally to him that he himself had to create the computer solution that his grandmother was missing.

The idea was that the computer should be easy to purchase, easy to own and easy to operate.

“One of the most important things that we had to do was limit the options on the screen to make it more accessible. It had to be a touchscreen monitor in order for it to be as intuitive as possible. Furthermore, we had to have a customer service team to provide our users with all the assistance they need, whether they had technical difficulties or just needed help navigating a website,” he explains.

A surprise for his grandmother

6 months after his telephone conversation with his grandmother, Lars Peter Larsen knocked on her door. With him he had a surprise – the very first dukaPC. That’s how his grandmother became the very first duka user.

“It is so liberating to finally be able to stay updated on my family’s whereabouts. I have also been using the computer to write to my grandchild in Kenya and I have reconnected with a childhood friend. We exchange e-mails now,” Ellen Marten says, who also uses the computer to read the news and check the weather forecasts.

“That day I got a birthday greeting from my grandmother – through e-mail. I have to admit that it sent shivers down my spine. In a way, this was proof that I had succeeded.”
